What is Beard Balm & How Do I Use It?

Are you looking for an on-the-go solution to a great beard?

Then look no further!

Beard Balm blesses us with great moisture, styling and conditioning, all in a handy little tin. So whether you’re on a road trip, having a long day at work or even walking down the red carpet (we’re sure Jake Gyllenhaal carries one in his pocket), the beard balm is the perfect boost of TLC your beard craves.

But what exactly is Beard Balm? How do you use it? And how does it differ from Beard Oil? Take a look below at our quick guide to Beard Balm and find out how you can get the most out of your beard.

What do Beard Balm do?

Beard Balm is a leave in conditioner. Throughout the course of the day Beard Balm moisturises and conditions your beard hairs, leaving them soft and refreshed. Often used for beard styling, the wax inside the beard balm will help mould and shape your beard as your desire. Your facial hair should feel shiny and smooth.

Beard Balm is a thick substance and is great for taming medium to long beards, or beards which are thick and coarse.

What is Beard Balm made of?

Some Beard Balms contain natural ingredients and others contain synthetic ingredients. We always recommend using natural products on your beard. The synthetic ingredients found inside certain beards brand products can cause skin irritation and may damage your facial hair. Treat your beard with natural oils and butters for best results.

Here is a list of ingredients you can find inside our premium Beard Balms:

  • Beeswax
  • Shea Butter
  • Sweet Almond Oil
  • Apricot Kernel Oil
  • Avocado Oil
  • Argan Oil
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Vitamin E Oil
  • Grapeseed Oil
  • Pumpkin Seed Oil
  • Hempseed Oil

These base ingredients create the nourishing foundation of the Beard Balm. As you can see the Beard is treated with carrier oils to leave it soft and supple. If you would like to learn more about how carrier oils can help your beard, check out our learning page here.

The Balms are then scented with different natural oils to give each Beard Balm a different fragrance. Our collections offer a range of scents so you can find the perfect one. If you would like to learn more about natural oils and their scents then click here.

Much like the base ingredients it is important to make sure the Beard Balm you choose uses natural oils to fragrance, rather than a synthetic scent. Synthetic fragrances can dry out your beard and can contain toxic chemicals, counteractive to the benefits of Beard Balm!

What is the difference between Beard Balm and Beard Oil?

Whilst the two are often used together, they are not the same. Although they are both used to moisturise and soften the beard there are some notable differences.

  • Texture

Beard Oil is thin and in liquid form, whilst Beard Balm contains Beeswax. This makes Beard Balm a much harder texture.

  • Purpose

Although Beard Oil does moisturise your hair, it’s main benefit is for the skin. If your beard is causing itchy, irritable skin underneath then Beard Oil can help. Your beard pulls natural oils from the skin beneath to gain moisture. Beard oil treats your hair with the natural oils it lacks, leaving it smooth and soft. It no longer has to feed from the skin beneath. By imitating your skin's natural oils such as Sebum, the Carrier oils soothe and replace the oils your skin has lost. It prevents itchy, dry skin, whilst moisturising and replenishing your beard.

Beard Balm is perfect for styling and taming the hairs. Whilst Beard Oil is a fundamental Beard care item, Beard Balm is a tool which can be used on the go and as a pick-me-up throughout the day. Not many people know that it can also be used to moisturise the skin! Try using it on your skin and see the hydrating effects.

How Do I Use Beard Balm?

Applying Beard Balm is pretty simple. Instructions can be found on the tin. If you would like to see a video guide on how to apply beard balm check this out.

Apply to a clean and dry beard.

Step 1: Use the back of your thumb to scrape the top of the tin and get a small amount of balm.

Step 2: Rub the balm in the palm of your hands. It should soften it to an oil like substance.

Step 3: In downward strokes, apply the balm throughout your beard and onto your skin.

Step 4: Use a brush or comb to pull the balm throughout your hair and apply it evenly.

Step 5: Style the beard in your desired way.
