12 Steps to Improve Your Self Esteem and Become a More Confident Man

Lots of men suffer from poor self-esteem. Men who lack confidence often underestimate their value and self-worth, damaging their mental health and affecting their daily routine and life ambitions.

1 - Maintain a Good Posture

Good posture gives an air of confidence on the outside, which will, over time, be reflected inwardly. On top of this, there are excellent health benefits as well. Did you know good posture aids with digestion and blood circulation? It helps decrease headaches and keeps your bones and joints aligned! When sat at a table, try not to slouch on your elbows. Stand with a straight and aligned spine. If you correct your habits every time you catch yourself doing them, then you will be on your way to a more confident and approachable appearance.

2 - Keep Tidy 

Maintaining a clean and neat appearance is a sure fast way to feel more confident within yourself and appear more confident to others. Although beauty comes from within, taking pride in your hygiene and image will give you stronger trust in yourself.

Top tips to keeping on top of your appearance: 

  1. Shower or bathe every day 
  2. Always use deodorant 
  3. Trim and clean underneath your nails (hands and feet) every week
  4. Moisturize your face every day

  6. Have a dedicated laundry day (well hour...)
  7. Buy 3 to 5 staple outfits that work well when mix and matched, so you never have to worry about what to wear when you're going out. 
  8. Buy at least one pair of shoes you keep for 'best"

3 - Get Some Exercise

Gym memberships nowadays can cost as little as $10. A big chunk of self-esteem issues are connected to how we perceive our bodies. Our bodies tone up and improve with exercise. Try to get exercise at least three times per week for about an hour each day. If the gym isn't for you, do physical activities such as hiking or even dancing around your living room. Exercise will also enhance your mental health and decrease depression.  

4 - Pay Attention to Your Circle

Some of us are blind to the fact that the people we surround ourselves with determine how we feel about ourselves. The people we are surrounded by influence the way we think and feel! Steer clear from people that put you down and downplay your accomplishments. Keep energetic, cheerful, and positive people in your circumference. Find friends with similar activities as your own. 

5 - Do Scary Stuff

Now, we’re not telling you to pick a fight with the biggest dude at the bar! Talk to your boss and ask for that raise you have been afraid to ask for. Approach that nice-looking girl you see in the elevator of your apartment complex each morning but are scared to talk to. You will never know what the results are until you do it! Remember, the world belongs to the brave! 

6 - Find a Hobby

7 - Mirror Morning Chat

Tell yourself what you need to hear every morning, even if you don't believe it. This can be anything from "you look great today" to "you are enough". Repeating positive affirmations to yourself in the mornings can set you on the right track for the day. Try saying the phrase three times into the mirror every day and see how it affects your mood. 

8 - Avoid Go Nowhere Relationships 

Please pay attention to how dates or potential lovers are treating you to avoid wasting time. If you are the only one texting first, that means that they are not making an effort to talk to you. Some of us learn this the hard way! When someone is genuinely interested and invested in you, they will make an effort to see you and reach out to you. Being aware of this will save you time and heartache in the future. Accept that you don't need to be everyone's cup of tea, but will one day be one person's shot of Hennessy

9 - Self-discipline

Keep the promises you make, and always stay true to yourself! Stick to the goals you make yourself (writing them down can help!). Good self-discipline will create behavior change and produce healthier habits. 

10 - Social Media

The internet is a fantastic tool that changed the world drastically and it has the power to do so much good. However, it has been proven that overexposure to social media can cause depression and anxiety. Deleting your social media can seem pretty drastic but if you feel like it is getting you down, take a break! 

Remember that social media content is an illusion, and only shows one side of a story that has been perfected for the public eye. People only show you what they want you to see. Remind yourself that there is never an obligation to follow anybody you do not wish to follow. Avoid people who post insensitive and offensive content as adding negativity to your feed can affect your confidence and mood. 

11 - Don't Compare

Theodore Roosevelt once said, "Comparison is the thief of joy." The words of this man could not be farther from the truth! Each journey is distinctive in its way. So if you feel like you are a late bloomer or haven't had the chance to move out of your parents yet, it's okay! Do things on your clock. 


As cheesy as it may sound, this is the most valuable one from this list! Many of us expect others to love us and do not know how to love ourselves. It isn't something that was taught to us at school. Loving yourself means treating yourself just as you would someone you love and care deeply about. Do not let people talk down to you or walk all over you. Set firm boundaries with people and pay close attention to those who only come around when they need a favor. Eat foods that will benefit your physical health. Practice assertiveness and learn to stand up for yourself when you need to. When you respect and love yourself, your taste in people will change dramatically. Increased self-esteem and confidence are sure to follow!
